Tenerife boat tour

89 boats leave this island on a normal day, carrying 85 658 reviews between them. 51 of them are the same trip — out to the whale channel and back — and the thing that actually changes your day is which harbour you sail from, not which boat you pick.

BOAT TOURS TENERIFE, IN ONE NUMBER

The harbour with the most boats is not the one with the most passengers

Costa Adeje lists 41 of the 89 boats and holds 23 182 reviews — about 565 a boat. Los Cristianos lists only 11 and holds 45 604, which is roughly 4 145 a boat. Las Galletas lists 14 boats and 225 reviews between all of them. A long list of departures is a marketing fact; a long list of passengers is a different one, and it is the one worth reading.

THE SIXTY-METRE RULE APPLIES TO ALL OF THEM

Whichever harbour you leave from, Canarian decree 178/2000 caps every boat at 60 m from the animals, thirty minutes near a group, and forbids swimming within five hundred metres of them. No boat on this island can sell you a closer encounter, so compare deck space, food and trip length instead.

SIX THINGS ABOUT BOOKING A BOAT

Before you pick one

01
Sixty per cent of the fleet is one trip
FIX51 of the 89 boats go to the same channel to meet the same two resident species under the same decree. The differences are the harbour, the deck, the food and the length — not the wildlife.
02
A long list of boats is not a busy harbour
FIXCosta Adeje lists 41 boats and Las Galletas 14, but between them Las Galletas has 225 reviews. Eleven boats in Los Cristianos carry 45 604. Read the sample size, not the shelf.
03
The cheapest seats are the widest decks
FIX€26–35 buys a shared boat with a broad departure window. If you want a small group, the sailing boats start around €75 and say so in the title.
04
Food on board is usually the upsell, not the meal
FIXThe buffet cruises cost roughly double the plain ninety-minute trip. That buys lunch and a longer day on the water — it does not buy a better sighting.
05
Los Gigantes puts the cliffs on the way out
FIXFrom that harbour the 600 m wall is the first ten minutes of the trip rather than a detour, which is the one genuine routing difference between the four ports.
06
The north coast barely has a fleet
FIXOne boat leaves from Puerto de la Cruz. The Atlantic swell on that side is the reason, and it is why every boat page on this site is about the south and west.
QUESTIONS

Boat tours, asked and answered

What is the best boat tour in Tenerife?

Travelin’ Lady: Eco Yacht Whale & Dolphin Safari + Swim at €30 — ★4.7 from 18 890 reviews, ninety minutes out of Los Cristianos, and the largest body of feedback on the island. For a quieter deck, Los Gigantes Whale Watching Cruise by Sailboat at €75 is ★4.9 from 2 241 under sail.

How much is a boat trip in Tenerife?

From €26 for a shared ninety-minute run to about €79 for a yacht with water toys, with the food-and-drink cruises in between at €47–64. Private charters run into the hundreds and are priced per group, not per person.

Which harbour should I sail from?

Los Cristianos if you want the residents in the shortest possible trip — they sit twenty minutes out and the harbour holds 45 604 reviews across just 11 boats. Los Gigantes if you also want the cliffs. Costa Adeje for the widest choice of longer cruises with food.

Do boat tours in Tenerife see whales?

Most of them, most days. Short-finned pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins are resident in the channel towards La Gomera year-round rather than migratory, which is why ninety minutes is enough and why nobody here sells a season.

Can you swim on a Tenerife boat tour?

On the two-hour and longer trips, yes — at an anchorage away from the animals. Swimming within five hundred metres of cetaceans is prohibited, so the swim stop is always somewhere else along the coast.

Are boat tours suitable for children?

The ninety-minute trips especially: short, in the lee of the coast, and over before anyone gets restless. Minimum ages vary by operator, so check the product page for the boat you want.

Is there a boat tour from the north of Tenerife?

Barely. One product leaves from Puerto de la Cruz. The Atlantic swell on the north coast is why the fleet lives on the south and west, and why a day trip from the north usually means a transfer south first.

When is the best time of day to go?

Morning sailings are the calmest — the wind builds through the afternoon on this coast. The exception is the sunset cruises, which are sold on the light rather than the sea state.

Is there a yacht tour Tenerife operators run, and what does it cost?

A Tenerife yacht tour covers two very different things. The cheap end is Travelin’ Lady: Eco Yacht Whale & Dolphin Safari + Swim at €30 — an eco yacht with a shared deck. The other end is a private boat tour Tenerife operators price per vessel: Private Yacht Trip with Watersports and Slides is €949 for the boat, and a south Tenerife private boat tour of that kind is a group booking, not a per-person one.

Is there a sailing tour Tenerife or a sailboat tour Tenerife?

Sixteen boats sail rather than motor. Los Gigantes Whale Watching Cruise by Sailboat at €75 is the best rated at ★4.9 from 2 241; a private sailing tour Tenerife operators offer starts around €55 for a three-hour charter. A Tenerife mount Teide and sailing boat day trip pairs the volcano with the water in one day.

Is there a boat tour Tenerife Costa Adeje leaves, or from Puerto Colón?

Costa Adeje is the biggest fleet on the island, and an exclusive boat tour in Puerto Colon Tenerife means one of the boats on that harbour’s pontoons. A catamaran tour Tenerife Costa Adeje sells starts at Whale Watching Catamaran Tour with Drinks, €35, and a south coast Tenerife boat tour with drinks and snacks is the longer version of it.

Is there a Los Gigantes Tenerife boat tour, or a Santa Cruz de Tenerife boat tour?

Los Gigantes has eleven boats and the cliffs on the doorstep — a dolphin tour Tenerife Los Gigantes operators run costs from €28. A Santa Cruz de Tenerife boat tour is a different proposition: the capital lists three boats, all private charters, because the animals live on the other coast.

Is there a Tenerife boat tour with drinks included?

Whale Watching Catamaran Tour with Drinks at €35 is the cheapest with drinks in the price. Above it, Marine-Life Tour with Transfer, Buffet and Drinks at €63 adds a buffet, and the private charters include whatever you agree with the operator.

Is there a kayak and snorkeling sightseeing tour in La Caleta?

One, and its listing is the phrase itself — a kayak and snorkeling sightseeing tour, La Caleta, Tenerife south. An hour and a half, small group, and €60 for the boat rather than the seat, up to three people in it, so it is €20 each at three and the whole kayak at one. Five stars from three reviews — too thin a record for the table above, and the price was read on 16 September rather than in the 11 September snapshot the rest of this page quotes. The island’s kayak-and-snorkel fleet is one of its biggest, and the strongest boats run from Los Cristianos and the Palm-Mar marine reserve instead — Kayak Safari and Snorkel in a Marine Reserve alone holds 3 474 of them at €23.
