Masca is a few dozen stone houses on a spur in the Teno massif, and until the second half of the twentieth century the only way in was on foot. The road that replaced the mule track is why the place is on every itinerary: it climbs out of Santiago del Teide, turns through a long sequence of hairpins with the massif on one side and nothing on the other, and drops into the village from above.

From the water the cliffs read properly — six hundred metres of basalt is hard to judge from a mirador above them, and every boat out of the marina spends part of its time sitting under that wall. The pools are the cheap pleasure of this coast: El Caletón in Garachico, the set the 1706 lava made, is free to walk into on your own if you are already there — though when the swell is up it is closed off.
