THE SHORT ANSWER

Every sight belongs to a direction, and every direction is a booking

There are two ways to read this island. A place is a thing you stand in front of — a summit, a gorge, a cliff. A direction is how you get there and what you book. Each of the six places below belongs to one of six directions, and the volcano and the whale channel carry 159 of 306 tours and 111 275 of 126 173 reviews between them.

The other four are quieter and cheaper. The north is also greener, because 520 mm of rain across 64 days a year does that.

SUMMIT TO SEA LEVEL

Six named places

Read top to bottom and you have descended the island: 3 715 metres to nothing in six steps. The bar on the left is each one's height against the summit; the tag says which direction books it.

3 715 m Pico del Teide

The highest point in Spain. The last 160 m to the crater need a €15 permit with a time slot, booked weeks ahead through Tenerife ON — no tour can give you one.

2 139 m Roques de García

Eroded lava monoliths on the caldera floor. Every minivan, coach and jeep stops here, which is why it is the photograph you have already seen.

TEIDE FROM THE SOUTH
Teide from the south
750 m to the sea Masca gorge

A village on a terrace above a ravine that drops to the water. Booking is mandatory, Wednesday to Saturday, €40.66 and up — and the descent and the boat back are separate tickets.

MASCA & THE WEST
Masca hub
up to 600 m Los Gigantes cliffs

A wall straight into the ocean. From the road above you see a coastline; the scale only reads from the water, which is why every photograph of it is taken from a boat.

LOS GIGANTES
Los Gigantes
0 m The whale channel

Resident short-finned pilot whales, twenty minutes out of Los Cristianos. They live there, so ninety minutes is genuinely enough — this is not a migration you can miss.

Three of the six are free to stand in front of. The three that are not — the cable car at €42, the summit permit at €15 and the gorge descent from €40.66 — are each bought separately, and none of them is inside a tour price.

SIX QUESTIONS

About the sights

What are the main sights on Tenerife?

Six, and they run from 3 715 m down to sea level: Pico del Teide, the cable car that climbs from 2 356 to 3 555 m, Roques de García on the caldera floor at 2 139 m, the Masca gorge with 750 m to the sea below it, the Los Gigantes cliffs up to 600 m, and the whale channel at nothing at all. Everything else on the island is a variation on one of them.

What is the difference between a place and a direction here?

A place is what you stand in front of; a direction is how you get there and what you book. Roques de García is a place — a lava monolith on the caldera floor. «Teide & Las Cañadas» is a direction: 102 tours, 27 173 reviews, from €15. Every place on this page names the direction that books it.

Which sights cost money to see?

Three of the six. The cable car is €42 adult return, €21 for a child, €23.50 one way, and it is bought separately from almost every tour on the site. The summit path needs its own permit at €15 per person with a time slot. The gorge descent at Masca is a separate booking from €40.66, Wednesday to Saturday. Roques de García, the Masca viewpoints, the cliffs from the road and the channel from the shore cost nothing.

Where do most people go?

The volcano and the water. Teide carries 102 tours and 27 173 reviews; the whale channel has fewer tours at 57 but 84 102 reviews — the most reviewed thing on the island by a wide margin, because a ninety-minute boat is the easiest sightseeing decision anyone makes here.

What is the cheapest sight to book?

Both Teide and Masca start at €15, the north at €16, Santa Cruz at €19 and the whale channel at €26. The floor across the whole catalogue is €15. The next islands are the expensive direction: La Palma and La Gomera start at €110, because a day there is a ferry plus a coach.

Can I see several of these in one day?

Yes, if they share a direction. Teide and Masca go together on one eight-hour tour at €86 — that is the product in the calendar above. The whale channel does not combine with the volcano on the same day unless you take the short versions of each, because one is at sea level and the other is two thousand metres up.
