Sightseeing tour to La Palma from Tenerife — and 11 other island days

12 products that leave the island for the day, and they split into three camps: the coach-and-ferry day to La Gomera, the small vehicle that can use the forest roads, or the longer crossing to La Palma and Gran Canaria. All of them cost a whole day of Tenerife, so the question is what the second island gives you that this one does not.

WHAT YOU ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO SEE

Two islands, and the newest ground in the Canaries

Most day trips sold from Tenerife go to La Gomera rather than La Palma, and the reason is distance: the nearer island is visible from Los Cristianos and the sailings run several times a day. What you cross for is Garajonay — a national park of 3 984 hectares, World Heritage since 1986, about seventy per cent laurel forest kept alive by cloud that sits on the ridge almost permanently.

Nine of the twelve go to La Gomera on the same crossing, so what separates them is the vehicle waiting on the other side — and, in the third camp, which island you cross to at all.

CAMP 01 · FERRY AND COACH

Ferry and coach

What this camp is

The most booked shape, and the one whose ratings tell the truth about long transfers. A coach collects you, a ferry crosses, another coach does the island loop, and the whole thing reverses. It works, it is the cheapest way over, and the biggest sample here holds ★4.1 — which is what a day of sitting earns. Book it for the price and the certainty: the crossing is handled, lunch is included, and nobody has to watch a timetable. Book something else if what you want is the inside of the island rather than its coast.

4 of 12cross on the coach-and-ferry day: a bus to the port, the sailing, and a bus on the island.

Who it suits

Anyone who wants the crossing handled and the price kept down. A coach collects you, the ferry does the water, another coach does the island loop, and the whole thing reverses before dark. Nobody has to watch a timetable, and that is most of what the price buys.

CAMP 02 · SMALL VEHICLE

Small vehicle

What this camp is

The interesting parts of La Gomera are up narrow roads a coach cannot take, so the vehicle decides the day more than the price does. A jeep or a capped minibus reaches the ridge and the terraced valleys, and the ratings show it: ★4.7 and ★4.8 against ★4.1 for the same crossing. This is also the camp to choose if Garajonay is the reason you are crossing — the forest roads above Valle Gran Rey are where a small vehicle stops being a luxury and starts being the only way through.

5 of 12use a jeep or a capped minibus, which is what reaches the forest roads above the terraced valleys.

Who it suits

People crossing for the inside of the island rather than its coast. The interesting parts of La Gomera are up narrow roads a coach cannot take, so the vehicle decides the day more than the price does — and on this crossing the ratings say so out loud.

CAMP 03 · THE LONGER CROSSINGS

La Palma and Gran Canaria

What this camp is

Further west is La Palma, where the four-year-old Tajogaite lava field is the reason to go and a guide is the way to see it. Further east is Gran Canaria, which is the weakest case in the hub — a long ferry with a guided loop attached. Read the review column carefully in this camp: one listing has none at all. La Palma also asks for a different kind of visit: the lava is four years old, the valley beneath it is still rebuilding, and the operators worth booking spend time down there rather than only at the cone.

3 of 12leave La Gomera out of it: two days to La Palma, one to Gran Canaria.

Who it suits

Anyone with a specific reason to pass La Gomera by. On La Palma that reason is the 2021 lava field and the valley under it; on Gran Canaria it is that the island was on the list already. Both are the longest days in this hub, and one of the three has no reviews at all.

1 219 haof lava from the Tajogaite eruption of 2021 — the reason the La Palma day exists at all.

TAJOGAITE 2021, IN FULL

The eruption that made the newest ground

The numbers matter here because the place is not a sight so much as a landscape people live in. Eighty-five days and eight hours of eruption covered 1 219 hectares of the Aridane valley in lava and put seven thousand people out of their homes; four years on, the valley is still rebuilding around it. Visit it with a guide, keep to the marked ground, and pick an operator that spends time in the valley rather than only at the cone.

SIX THINGS THAT DECIDE THE DAY

Before you book a second island

01

A second island costs a whole day of this one.

WHAT TO DO

Nine to ten hours, most of it moving. Cross only if you are here for a week or more, or if the specific thing you want is not on Tenerife.

02

Coach days rate lower for a reason.

WHAT TO DO

The most booked crossing holds ★4.1 across 2 195 reviews. Forty euro more buys the jeep at €150 and ★4.7 — same island, different day.

03

Garajonay is usually in cloud.

WHAT TO DO

That is what keeps the laurel forest alive; about seventy per cent of the park is it. Take the layer you would take to Anaga and stop expecting a view from the top.

04

La Palma is a place people live in, not a sight.

WHAT TO DO

The 2021 lava covered homes and farms, and the valley is still rebuilding. Pick an operator that spends time in the valley, not only at the cone, and keep to the marked ground.

05

The ferry timetable is the whole plan.

WHAT TO DO

Miss the return sailing and you are staying the night. If you are going independently, book the crossing and the car together and build an hour of slack into the afternoon.

06

Two products here have almost no reviews.

WHAT TO DO

The La Palma sightseeing tour at €168 has none at all, and one Gomera day has fewer than sixty. Treat those ratings as absent, and read the review column before the star.

IN DEPTH

What a day off the island contains, and why there is no Gran Canaria tour from Tenerife worth the crossing

UNESCO listed it because that forest is a relict of Tertiary vegetation which has otherwise disappeared from southern Europe. It is also why the park is usually grey: the cloud is the mechanism, not the weather spoiling the day. Take the layer you would take to Anaga and stop expecting a view from the top.

La Palma is the longer crossing and the newer landscape. The Tajogaite eruption began at 15:11 on 19 September 2021 and was declared over at 22:21 on 13 December — eighty-five days and eight hours, 1 219 hectares of lava, seven thousand people evacuated. It is the longest and the largest eruption in the island’s written history, and the Aridane valley is still rebuilding underneath it.

What separates the products is the vehicle, not the island. Nine of the twelve go to La Gomera, they all use the same crossing, and they all have nine or ten hours to fill. A coach does the coast road and the main viewpoints; a jeep or a capped minibus gets up the narrow roads into the forest and the terraced valleys, which is where the island stops looking like a smaller Tenerife. Forty euro is the difference, and the ratings follow it almost exactly.

TWELVE QUESTIONS

The neighbours, asked and answered

What is the best island day trip from Tenerife?

Full-Day Gomera Jeep Safari Excursion from Arona at €150 — ★4.7 from 569 reviews, a full day on La Gomera in a 4×4 that can use the forest roads. It is the best rating-to-volume combination in this hub, and the format suits the island: the interesting parts are up narrow roads a coach cannot take.

How much is a day trip from Tenerife to another island?

La Gomera is €110–180 depending on the vehicle. La Palma is €130–168. Gran Canaria is €123. Nothing here comes in under €110, because every price has a ferry inside it.

Is a day trip to La Gomera worth it?

If you have a week or more on Tenerife, yes — Garajonay is a 1986 World Heritage site of 3 984 hectares, about seventy per cent laurel forest in permanent cloud, and there is nothing quite like it on Tenerife. On a short stay it costs a whole day of an island that has its own volcano, forest and gorge.

Can you visit the 2021 volcano on La Palma?

Yes, with a guide. The Tajogaite eruption ran from 15:11 on 19 September 2021 to 22:21 on 13 December, eighty-five days and eight hours, and left 1 219 hectares of lava. Day Trip to La Palma Volcanic Landscapes at €130, ★4.4 from 221 reviews, is the main day trip onto it from Tenerife.

Why is Garajonay a World Heritage site?

UNESCO listed it in 1986 because the laurel forest there is a relict of Tertiary vegetation that has otherwise disappeared from southern Europe. The park covers 3 984 hectares and about seventy per cent of it is that forest, kept alive by cloud that sits on the ridge almost permanently.

How long is the ferry from Tenerife to La Gomera?

Short enough that the crossing is not the problem — La Gomera is visible from Los Cristianos and the sailings run several times a day. What decides an independent trip is the return timetable rather than the outbound one; miss it and you are staying the night.

Can I do La Gomera on my own with a hire car?

Yes, and it is the one hub on this site where the do-it-yourself row is a real plan. Book the ferry and the car together in advance, and build an hour of slack into the afternoon — the roads on La Gomera are slow and the return sailing is not negotiable.

Which island trip has the most reviews?

From South Tenerife: La Gomera Island Day Trip with Lunch at €110, with 2 195 reviews at ★4.1. That is the largest sample here and the lowest rating in its camp, and the two go together: a coach day with a ferry at each end is a long way to sit.

Is Gran Canaria worth a day from Tenerife?

Less than La Gomera, honestly. Gran Canaria Full-Day Guided Tour with Aquarium at €123 rates ★4.4 from 64 reviews and is a long ferry with a guided loop and an aquarium attached. It works if Gran Canaria is on your list anyway; as a first island day it is beaten by the nearer neighbour.

What should I wear for Garajonay?

What you would wear for Anaga: a layer and something windproof. The park is in cloud most of the time by design — that cloud is what feeds the laurel forest — so expect damp air and limited views from the ridge rather than a sunny walk.

Which island tour should I skip?

From South Tenerife: La Gomera Full-Day Trip at €110 holds ★4.1 from 52 reviews for the same crossing that better-rated products do at the same price. There is no reason to take the weaker one when the alternatives are a few euro apart.

Do these trips include the ferry?

Every product in this table does — the price covers the crossing, the guide and usually lunch, which is why none of them starts below three figures. Tours that begin on the other island and leave the ferry to you are not listed here; they are a different purchase.

What is the best La Gomera tour from Tenerife?

La Gomera Small-Group Day Trip, max 18 people at €149 — ★4.5 from 236 reviews and capped at eighteen people, which is the difference that shows on a ferry day. The cheapest way across is From South Tenerife: La Gomera Island Day Trip with Lunch at €110, ★4.1 from 2 195 — a coach day, and the ratings say so.

Is there a private La Gomera tour from Tenerife?

Yes, two. From South Tenerife: VIP Gomera Tour at €165 and Full-Day Vip Tour to Gomera at €180, both small-group VIP days rather than coach seats. They cost roughly half as much again as the standard crossing.

Is there a VIP La Gomera 4x4 tour from south Tenerife?

Full-Day Gomera Jeep Safari Excursion from Arona at €150 is the 4x4 version — ★4.7 from 569 reviews, leaving from Arona in the south. The jeep matters on Gomera: the island is a spiral of ridge roads and the interior is where the laurel forest is.

Is there a La Palma tour from Tenerife?

Two products only. Day Trip to La Palma Volcanic Landscapes at €130 — ★4.4 from 221 — and Sightseeing Tour to the Isla Bonita - La Palma at €168, which has no reviews yet. La Palma is a flight rather than a ferry, which is why the list is short.

Is there a La Palma volcano tour from Tenerife?

Day Trip to La Palma Volcanic Landscapes is the one — the day is built around the ground the 2021 Tajogaite eruption left behind. It is the only product in the catalogue that takes you to the newest land in the Canaries and back in a day.

Is there a La Cumbrecita tour from Tenerife?

No tour in the catalogue is sold under that name. La Cumbrecita is the viewpoint into the Caldera de Taburiente on La Palma, and access to its car park has to be reserved in advance with the national park — which is why day trips from Tenerife sell the volcanic landscapes instead.
