Dolphin tour Tenerife

29 products carry the word dolphin, and 65 762 reviews between them. Not one of them is a dolphin-only trip: the same boat goes out to the same strip of water and meets whichever of the two resident species turns up. That is the honest version, and it is better news than it sounds.

THE SHORT ANSWER

There is no dolphin-only tour, and you do not need one

Bottlenose dolphins and short-finned pilot whales both live in the channel between the south-west coast and La Gomera all year round, in the same water, often within sight of each other. Every operator sells the trip as “whale and dolphin” because that is what the trip is. Travelin’ Lady: Eco Yacht Whale & Dolphin Safari + Swim at €30 is the most reviewed product on this entire site — ★4.7 from 18 890 — and the dolphins are as likely on it as on anything with the word in the title.

THE RULES EVERY BOAT WORKS TO

Decreto 178/2000, in numbers

Figures checked against the sources named under the table.

Canary decree 178/2000 on cetacean watching, as published by the Gobierno de Canarias. No affiliate links on this table.
RuleLimitWhat it means on the day
Closest approach60 mNo boat may manoeuvre nearer, whatever the photographs show
Boats within 100 mmax 2Which is why a crowded sighting thins out quickly
Time within 100 mmax 30 minThe cap that makes a ninety-minute trip enough
Boats within 500 mmax 3The outer ring, counted by the operators themselves
Speed within 500 m4 knotsOr the speed of the slowest animal, whichever is less
Swimming or divingbanned in 500 mSo the swim stop is always a bay somewhere else
Feeding, dumpingbannedNothing goes over the side near the animals
Licence flag“Barco Azul”Yellow pennant on the mast, with the permit period on it
SWIMMING WITH THEM

You cannot. Swimming and diving within five hundred metres of cetaceans are prohibited, so every swim stop advertised on these tours happens somewhere else along the coast, normally after the watching. A product that implies otherwise is describing something that is not legal here.

SIX THINGS ABOUT DOLPHIN TRIPS

Before you book a boat

01
Nobody sells a dolphins-only trip
FIXEvery product here is a whale-and-dolphin boat, because both species live in the same water and the boat cannot choose. Booking one with “dolphin” in the title changes nothing about where it goes.
02
You cannot swim with them
FIXSwimming and diving are prohibited within five hundred metres of cetaceans. The swim stops on these products are bays elsewhere on the coast, usually on the way back.
03
Sixty metres is the same for everyone
FIXNo operator may manoeuvre closer, so a boat that appears to get nearer in a photograph is either lucky — the animals approached it — or in breach.
04
Ninety minutes is genuinely enough
FIXThe residents sit about twenty minutes out of Los Cristianos, and the decree caps any boat at thirty minutes near a group. Longer trips buy food, a swim stop and coastline, not a better sighting.
05
The cheap boats are the busy boats
FIX€26–30 buys a shared deck with a wide departure window. If space matters more than price, the small-group sailing boats start around €63.
06
Read the review count before the star
FIXThis family holds 65 762 reviews, but they are not spread evenly: two products carry half of them. A ★4.9 from thirty is a weaker claim than a ★4.7 from eighteen thousand.
QUESTIONS

Dolphins, asked and answered

Can you swim with dolphins in Tenerife?

No. Swimming and diving within five hundred metres of cetaceans are prohibited by Decreto 178/2000. Every swim stop sold on these tours happens somewhere else along the coast, normally in a bay after the watching is over.

What is the best dolphin tour in Tenerife?

Travelin’ Lady: Eco Yacht Whale & Dolphin Safari + Swim at €30 — ★4.7 from 18 890 reviews, ninety minutes out of Los Cristianos, and the most reviewed product on this site. Eco No-Chase Respectful Whale & Dolphin Encounter at €28 is the second biggest sample and puts the no-chase rule in its own name.

Are there dolphins in Tenerife all year?

Yes. Bottlenose dolphins are one of two resident populations in the channel towards La Gomera — the other is short-finned pilot whales — and both are there every month. That is why the boats run daily and why ninety minutes is enough.

How much does a dolphin tour cost?

From €26 for a shared ninety-minute boat to about €65 for a small-group sailing trip with food. The two most reviewed products sit at €28 and €30, which is the going rate for the standard trip out of Los Cristianos.

Will I definitely see dolphins?

No operator guarantees a sighting and neither will we. What is different here is that the animals are resident rather than migratory, so the odds are far better than on a seasonal whale-watching trip elsewhere in Europe.

What is the difference between the whale and dolphin tours?

Nothing but the wording. The same boats meet both species in the same water; operators put whichever word sells in the title. Compare them on deck space, trip length, food and departure harbour instead.

Where do the boats leave from?

Los Cristianos has the most departures and the cheapest ninety-minute boats; Los Gigantes adds the six-hundred-metre cliffs to the same trip; Costa Adeje is where the longer food-and-swim cruises start. The residents sit between the first two.

Is it suitable for children?

Most of these are, and the ninety-minute trips especially: short, calm water in the lee of the coast, and over before anyone gets restless. Check the product page for the minimum age, which varies between operators.
