Puerto de la Cruz sightseeing

29 products leave from Puerto de la Cruz, carrying 1 573 reviews, from €20. It is the island’s second departure base and the oldest resort on it, and what leaves from here is a different list from the south: more quads up through Orotava, a hop-on bus, a tuk-tuk, and the only submarine on Tenerife.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Closer to the volcano, further from the whales

From here the climb to the caldera goes up through La Orotava and takes about an hour, and the north-west — Icod, Garachico, Masca — is a half-day rather than a full one. What you lose is the sea: the whale and dolphin boats all work out of Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, an hour and a half away. Quad Tour to Teide or Off-Road Adventure at €80 is the strongest product on this list, ★4.9 from 593 reviews.

THE SEA HERE IS NOT THE SEA DOWN SOUTH

Puerto de la Cruz faces the open Atlantic on the windward side. The town beaches run red and yellow flags often, which is exactly why César Manrique built a seawater lido here in the first place. Check the flag before the forecast.

SIX THINGS ABOUT BASING IN THE NORTH

Before you book from Puerto

01
The whale boats are not here
FIXEvery cetacean trip in the catalogue leaves Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje or Los Gigantes. From Puerto that is an hour and a half each way, so it becomes a full day.
02
Teide, on the other hand, is close
FIXThe TF-21 climbs out of La Orotava straight into the park — about an hour. Seven of the departures from this town are quads and buggies using exactly that road.
03
The weather is the north’s weather
FIXCloud sits on this coast for part of most days, particularly in the afternoon. It is why the vegetation is green and why the sunbathing is better elsewhere.
04
The sea is rough more often than not
FIXRed and yellow flags are routine on the town beaches. The Manrique lido exists because of it, and it is the safe swim in this town.
05
Two town products are weakly rated
FIXThe hop-on bus at ★3.8 and the walking tour at ★3.3 are the lowest-rated products on this page. The tuk-tuk at ★4.7 from 32 is the better small-format option.
06
It is the oldest resort on the island
FIXPuerto has been receiving visitors since the nineteenth century, and the town reads that way — a working port and old quarter rather than a purpose-built strip.
QUESTIONS

Puerto de la Cruz, asked and answered

Is Puerto de la Cruz a good base for sightseeing?

For the volcano and the north-west, yes — the caldera is about an hour away up through La Orotava, and Masca, Garachico and Icod are half-day trips. For whale watching and the southern boats it is a poor base: they all leave from the other side of the island.

What tours leave from Puerto de la Cruz?

29 products in the catalogue, from €20. Seven are quads or buggies up to Teide, ten are minivan day tours, and the rest are town products — a hop-on bus, two tuk-tuk routes, a walking tour and the island’s only submarine.

What is the best tour from Puerto de la Cruz?

Quad Tour to Teide or Off-Road Adventure at €80 — ★4.9 from 593 reviews, the largest sample here. For a day tour rather than a machine, West Tenerife: Icod, Garachico & Masca Scenic Route Tour at €67 holds ★4.9 from 151.

What is Lago Martiánez?

A seawater lido on the town sea front designed by César Manrique and opened in 1977, with seven pools — four for adults, three for children — fed from the Atlantic. It is the reliable swim in a town whose beaches are often flagged.

Can you swim in Puerto de la Cruz?

At the lido, always; on the beaches, when the flags allow. This is the windward coast and the swell comes straight in, so red and yellow flags are common at Playa Jardín and Playa Martiánez.

How far is Teide from Puerto de la Cruz?

About an hour by road, climbing the TF-21 through La Orotava. That is why so many of the quad and buggy products here are three-hour trips rather than full days.

Is there a hop-on hop-off bus?

Yes, at €22, though it is the weakest-rated product on this page at ★3.8 from 14 reviews. The tuk-tuk route at €25 rates ★4.7 from 32 for a similar hour around the town.

Should I stay in the north or the south?

North for the volcano, the old towns and greener landscape; south for the sun, the beaches and every boat in the catalogue. Most tours run from both, but the driving time is what changes.
