THE VERDICT

★4.9 from 82, with the guide at 5.0 and the transport at 5.0 — the highest pair of sub-scores on any tour we have reviewed for this site. The thing to weigh is not quality but geography: the north is a long way from the southern resorts, and the drive is part of what you buy.

IN DEPTH

The detail behind the verdict

The operator publishes its own timings, so the day is easy to do arithmetic on. Seventy-five minutes to reach Las Teresitas, an hour on that beach, forty minutes on the drive to Taganana, forty at Benijo, an hour through the Anaga forest, forty-five minutes across to La Laguna and an hour walking there — then the same journey home. Roughly two and a half hours of a seven-hour day is the transfer, which is not a criticism of anyone: that is simply where Anaga is.

It does mean that if you are staying in the north already, a shorter tour will give you more of the same places. What makes this one work is the private format. The guide contacts you a few days ahead to shape the itinerary, and the reviews describe exactly that — the route bent around what people wanted, plus advice for the following day. Note that several different guides appear by name: Max, Ilija, Alex and Frederico all collect five stars, so you are buying the outfit rather than one person.

Two details to check when you book. The languages listed at the top of the page — English, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian — are not the same as the ones in the inclusions, which name English, Spanish and Italian only. Ask for yours by name. And the price is quoted per person on a private tour, so the number multiplies with the size of your party rather than being split by it. Lunch is an optional stop at a Canarian restaurant and is not in the price; fresh fruit and water are. One clarification the listing leaves vague: La Laguna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while Anaga is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Both are real, and they are not the same designation.

Questions about this tour

Is the private Anaga and La Laguna tour worth it?

★4.9 from 82 with the guide and the transport both at a flat 5.0 is the best record we have seen on this island. Worth it depends on whether you want the north badly enough to spend a couple of hours driving to it.

Is the price for the whole car?

No. It is quoted per person even though the tour is private, so four people pay four times the headline. That is the opposite of how the buggy and quad tours price themselves, and it is worth checking before you compare numbers.

How much of the day is driving?

Around two and a half hours by the operator’s own timings — seventy-five minutes each way, plus the legs between stops. Anaga is at the far end of the island from the resorts.

Which guide will I get?

One of several. Reviews name Max, Ilija, Alex and Frederico, all with five stars. Whoever it is will contact you a few days before to agree the route.

What languages are available?

The top of the page lists English, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian; the inclusions name English, Spanish and Italian. Ask for the language you need by name when you book.

Is lunch included?

No. There is an optional stop at a Canarian restaurant at extra cost. Fresh fruit and water on the road are included.

Can we change the route?

That is the point of it. The itinerary is described as tailor-made and the guide agrees it with you beforehand; the reviews say the pace and the stops bend to the group.

Is Anaga a World Heritage Site?

Anaga is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve; La Laguna, later in the day, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both appear on the listing as UNESCO, and they are different designations.

How long do we get in La Laguna?

An hour of guided walking, plus the optional tasting. It is the one thing reviewers ask for more of, which is fair after five hours of coast and forest.

Anything that would rule me out?

The listing says it is not suitable for anyone afraid of heights. The roads through Anaga and down to Taganana are narrow and high, and that is most of the scenery.
